Shelley and Bill's Cherry Blossom Engagement
I met Shelley a few years ago when she contacted me about headshots. We hit off immediately and had a great session in my Clarksburg studio. We talked about music, T.V and family. About a year late she contacted us about shooting her wedding and said she’d always wanted to have her portraits taken with the cherry blossoms in the tidal basin for her engagement.
Cherry blossoms are a photographers dream! Washington D.C during the festival however can be a nightmare. BUT, it doesn’t have to be. We chose a very frosty 25 degree Monday morning right around 9am, before all the school tours and blossom seeking crowds arrived. We had the Jefferson memorial and most of the tidal area mostly to ourselves.
Shelley and Bill were awesome to photograph, even though they jokingly told the park police, “no, I have no idea if he has a permit”, I always have my permits so jokes on you! They braved the chilly temps and wind like champions. We started off at the Jefferson memorial, worked our way around the walking path back towards the Washington monument. We kept Shelley bundled up during our walks and during the posing. Once I was ready to hit the shutter I grabbed her coat, snapped away.
Before I get to the images just a few tips if you’re planning on shooting anywhere in Washington D.C.
Get your permits in order. If I know we’re going to shoot in this area I take care of all the permits so you don’t have to add dealing with park police to your list.
Shoot early. Crowds start massing after 10am, even on weekdays, so to ensure you have as few people in your photos as possible, the earlier the better.
Plan your locations. I will make a shoot plan with you so that we know what locations we’ll be at and when. You need that for the permit so may as well plan it early.
